LOCATION: Outside of Indianola, in central Iowa
WEATHER: Some thunderstorms. Highs in 60s
We left Elk Rock Park fairly early as thunderstorms were predicted. We only had to drive about 50 miles. We drove through some rain, but it stopped when we arrived at our new campground so we could set up easily. We were pleasantly surprised at the lower price ($11). Several other RVs are here; all local.
We went into town for lunch and grocery shopping. We couldn't find any interesting restaurants, so ended up at Cal's Fine Dining and Spirits. It wasn't what I would call fine dining, but we did have some tasty house-smoked chicken wings and a Des Moines craft beer.
At the grocery, we splurged and bought an Iowa ribeye steak and Iowa porkloin. Part of the Iowa experience!
We took a short hike around the campground, but cut it short when it started to rain again. We spent the rest of the afternoon watching an old DVD, Cabaret.
We are about 20 miles from the town where I grew up. I don't know why we didn't come to this park then. It is very nice, with boat ramps, fishing piers, picnic areas, and a swimming beach. The nearby city of Indianola is where my class reunion is on Saturday.
DINNER: George outdid himself. He made a great campfire and grilled the rib-eye just right. For sides, we had baked potatoes and a mix of sautéed zucchini, onions and tomatoes. All with a great Shiraz.
