LOCATION: 30 miles east of Bryce Canyon in central Utah
WEATHER: Very windy. Highs in 60s. Cold nights in 20s
We had our thermostat set to its lowest point, at 50 degrees, and it ran most of the night. We wanted to make sure our water pipes didn't freeze.
We packed up from Bryce Canyon and drove along one of Utah's many famous scenic byways. We stopped at a visitor center to determine our route. They highly recommended nearby Kodachrome Basin State Park. We drove 9 miles into a box canyon to the park. The "campground full" sign greeted us. It was only 11:00 AM, so we thought that someone might have left and they hadn't yet updated their sign. Luckily, they had 2 sites remaining, but just for tonight. We'll have to move tomorrow. This Easter/spring break busy period is tiresome.
It is a beautiful park. We read that the color and contrast of the sunlight on the sandstone rocks prompted the National Geographic Society to name the park Kodachrome in 1949 with consent from the Kodak Film Company. For young readers, Kodachrome was the name of film used in cameras in the 50s and 60s. (Cameras used to require film!)
Even though this is a small campground, there are 4 other Airstreams here. We haven't seen any for awhile. We walked around and talked to the owners who were around. One was a young woman, probably in her 40s, who has been traveling alone in her Airstream for 13 years!
We took 2 hikes through the canyon, marveling at the views. There were a lot of boulders to climb over. Coming down, I sit and slide, fearing that I might twist an ankle if I try to walk down. I dont care how silly I look. :-)
We took advantage of their nice showers. With the wind, there is dust everywhere.
DINNER: Leftover chicken meatballs sautéed with potato slices and onions. Side dish of green beans.
