WEATHER: Partly sunny. High around 70
After taking care of our charges, we headed again to the Peak District. We rode up on the front, top seat in a double-decker bus on a 2-hour ride. The views of the countryside from up top are great. We are really getting our money's worth from our weekly tram/bus pass!
Today's first destination was Matlock. It is a lovely small town set in a verdant valley with a river running through it. There is a famous castle on the hilltop overlooking the town....
We stopped at this pub for lunch. Since today is Friday, we had their fish & chips special. George had a little language problem when he couldn't understand the server's question....."with mushy peas or English peas?" After another customer interpreted this for him, he selected mushy. They were good!
From there, we stopped at another town called Chesterfield. It is famous for its crooked church spire. We learned that it had been built with green wood, then it warped over the years.
A view of the spire next to the Crooked Spire Pub...
Another view comparing it to straight buildings...
Chesterfield has a market several times a week, set on the town's cobblestone streets. We bought a few vegetables.
The bus ride home was great, too. Since we were on a ridge, we could see into the valleys below.
Once home, George relaxed with a Guinness porter, not stout. This porter was their original product starting in 1759.
DINNER: Chili (spelled chilli here).
