August 12, 2016. A glorious day in Canterbury!

LOCATION:  Housesitting in Orpington, England, near London
WEATHER:  Very nice.  Sunny. Highs mid-70s

Our destination today was Canterbury, about 1.5 hours southeast from here by train.  We passed through lots of hay fields on our way.

Our first view of the city is the wall that previously encircled the city.

The city is filled with history.  We walked along a pedestrian mall on our way to the Cathedral.

The Canterbury Cathedral is majestic, with its tall gothic architecture.

We toured the cathedral, reminding us of the history here, where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered.  Then later the many people that came here on a pilgrimage.

After the cathedral, we visited the remains of a Catholic Abbey that had been mostly destroyed by one of the kings, then made our way to a lovely gardens area on the river.

Some tourists rented a gondola with a driver, just like Venice!

I have been nagging George to get a haircut.  Parts of the long hair curl under the baseball cap he always wears.  He said he was waiting for a barbershop with cheap prices.  I spotted one advertising cuts for about $8 USD, so he agreed to do it.  His barber was Turkish.  He did a good job, ending with a  flourish ......he lit a stick and burned off stray hairs around his head and ears. Quite a show!

While waiting for our train home, George wanted to try a beer at this pub, England's oldest brewer from the 1600s.

We had this beer, The Bishop's Finger.  It got its name from the finger painted on the public footpaths guiding the pilgrims to Canterbury in medieval times.

What a nice day! We rode home, transferring in one of the stations where the Eurostar train (London to Paris) stops.

DINNER:  We picked up some fish & chips at a nearby takeaway that our homeowners had recommended.  We ate "al fresco" in our garden.  True....they were the best fish & chips we have had on this trip.  Sadly, they aren't served anymore in newspapers.
