June 6, 2016. Excursion into Ballarat

LOCATION:  Housesitting near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia
WEATHER:  Cool. Rainy. Highs in 50s

We drove into Ballarat, about 15 minutes away, through farmland with lots of sheep and cows.

Ballarat was founded in the gold rush, and has preserved many of its old buildings.  The homeowners had left us a list of recommended restaurants, so we were anxious to check them out.  We selected L'Espresso, a darling tiny bistro/coffee shop.

We had an absolutely superb lunch.  We shared the risotto, cooked in squid ink and topped with marinated grilled calamari and topped with a bit of Saffron aioli.

Everything on the menu looked interesting and yummy.  Can't wait to return!

Then, we walked around downtown a bit until it started to rain.

We found the supermarket and stocked up.  George filled up "Old Smokey", the truck.

DINNER:  Sautéed seafood mix over spaghetti.

We watched the news again, in front of the cozy fireplace.   The headlines recently have been about the torrential rains along the east coast and in Tasmania.  The town where we housesat, Latrobe, has been especially hit.  I contacted our previous homeowner there as I was worried about them.  They are ok, but a neighbor down their very street had to be rescued by helicopter from his rooftop, and his wife is missing.
