WEATHER: Record-breaking warm, sunny day. High 85
After morning chores around the house and playing with Lola the cat, we headed west toward the Columbia Gorge. On the way, we stopped at another McMenamins for lunch. The brewmaster gave us a tour of the small brewery there.
The McMenamins business model is very clever. At every location, they have a common food and beer menu, but in addition, each has unique beers and food. This brewmaster told us he has the latitude of creating his own beer while also making some of the standards for 3 different McMenamins pubs. We had a great pumpkin soup and his Alt beer.
On to the Columbia Gorge. We took the scenic route, and it lived up to its scenic designation. We stopped at several waterfalls for hikes.
Historic Route 30 meandered along the Columbia River.
It is often very crowded, but we lucked out today.
Our last waterfall along the way was Multnomah, the most popular. It is the 2nd highest falls in the USA, after one in Yosemite.
We stopped in cute Cascade Locks and stumbled upon a tiny brewpub on the water.
We'd like to return one day, as there is a municipal campground just steps away.
Our last stop was Hood River. We visited the huge Full Sail Brewery.
We then crossed over to the Washington side and followed another scenic highway back home.
Great day!
DINNER: Grilled portabello mushrooms that I coated with an olive oil/garlic/herb mix. I served the caps on a bed of arugula and topped with Parmesan shavings. Yummy, and another inexpensive meal.....less than $3 each.
