June 9, 2015. Exploring Crater Lake

CAMPGROUND: 2nd night at Mazama Campground inside Crater Lake National Park
LOCATION:  Southern Oregon
WEATHER: Nice. Highs about 70

Since it was hot when we went to bed last night, we slept with all the windows open.  Consequently, the sun woke us up about 5:00 AM.  It rained a bit and was cold, so we took our time with morning routines.  When it cleared, we drove a few miles to the historic Crater Lake Lodge.  Like some other lodges in national parks, it is a lovely restored landmark.  We sat in the Grand Hall in front of the  roaring fire.  Hard to believe that it was so hot yesterday.

In the afternoon, we drove around the lake and hiked some rim trails.  We went back to the lodge for a glass of wine on their deck, to gaze at the lake.  It was a perfect temperature. There are quite a few international tourists here.

The water has the most clarity of any lake in the world, with 143 feet visibility.

DINNER:  Time to go shopping again!  I used up leftovers and dipped into the back-up food box.  I made spaghetti with fava beans I had shelled, blanched and frozen at the organic farm, and leftover broccoli stems, onions, a bit of diced spam, and garlic.  At the end, I stirred in some delicious goat cheese we had bought at the farmer's market.  Not too bad!
