September 18, 2016. Lava and lager!

CAMPGROUND:  2nd night at Thousand Trails
LOCATION:  Bend, Oregon in south central Oregon
WEATHER:  Cold in AM (39) warming to 70

We visited Newberry Volcano Lava Fields National Monument.  What a find!  It is a huge area, about the size of Rhode Island.  Part of the Cascades, it consists of lava fields, volcano and lakes formed from earlier eruptions.  We took a hike to some beautiful waterfalls along the Deschutes River.

Then we drove up to Lava Butte where the fire watch tower is. You can see mountains in Washington and California from here.  They have  fresh snow on them.

We will visit other sections of the park later.  But for now, lunch was calling.  We found a cute neighborhood brewpub called The Rathole and had a delicious lunch and a rye IPA.  Then we explored the town.  Following that, we went on a brewery tour of 10 Barrel Brewing.  Our tour guide was fun.

DINNER:  Grilled chicken (using George Foreman grill) with onions and potatoes in a tomato sauce.
