Day 333. July 5, 2014. Exploring Whitehorse

LOCATION:  Whitehorse, Yukon along Alaska Highway
WEATHER:  Partly cloudy.  Cool. Highs in 50s

.  We moved to a site with electricity and water, so are much more comfortable now.  We have been staying in Provincial Parks since leaving Martha and Leo. They are always very pretty, but don't have any amenities.  Pit toilets and water from a pump that we hope is potable.  Last night when we arrived late, the only space available was an unserviced one.  So today, we are feeling very luxurious.  We took advantage of their nice showers.

We found the downtown farmers' market and bought some Yukon-grown lettuce and homemade bread.  Then we shopped at the Yukon Brewery and filled our growler.  Nice people.

We stopped by the fish ladder, next to the dam on the Yukon River.  This was built so that the salmon can swim upstream to where they started, and spawn.

There are many float planes on the river.  Some are for tourists, taking people fishing and for sightseeing tours.  Others are for locals who live outside of town where there are no roads.  In the winter, they can travel by snowmobiles, but it the summer, everything is swampy.  We hear the planes frequently.
We had chicken wings for lunch at a downtown pub called Dirty Northern Bastard.  I had an IPA, and George had a porter, both from a brewery in Victoria, B. C.

We drove around town in search of WIFI, parking in front of Tim Horton's.  We tried to listen to Prairie Home Companion online from Minnesota Public Radio, but it just kept streaming.

DINNER:  George made a nice campfire and we grilled the rest of the lamb.  I also grilled bell peppers. We ate our new lettuce salad, then I served the lamb with some soft goat cheese on top.  Very gourmet and easy!

After dinner, George went to a tutorial on fishing.  He bought a fishing license and hopes to catch some fish.  While he was away, I used my 30 minute campground WIFI minutes.  I corresponded with our future son-in-law and his father about our plans to visit India in November.  So exciting!
