Day 335. July 7, 2014. Off to Skagway

LOCATION:  Whitehorse, Yukon on Alaska Highway, mile #900
WEATHER:  Partly cloudy. Highs in 60s

One of our campground neighbors found this porcupine sauntering around.  He wasn't bothered by anyone!

We drove south about 150 miles on the Klondike Highway through the Yukon, a sliver of British Columbia, then through a part of SE Alaska to Skagway.

The road had been closed for a few days due to landslides
Skagway was full of tourists.  Three gigantic cruise ships had just disgorged thousands of them.  Others came from inland via a cute steam train.
We had lunch at the Skagway Brewery.  We shared a yummy smoked salmon sandwich.  Later we called our daughters since we had AT &T service.  We did some food and beverage shopping, back in the land of "cheaper" prices.

We stopped by the ferry office and made the plunge....we bought tickets to return to B.C. from Alaska on the ferry for early August.  It is quite expensive, but everyone says the passageway is fantastic.  Also, when you factor in $200/day gas bills driving back, it makes it more palatable.

Returning to the Yukon, we stopped in a cute town Carcross that has the world's smallest desert.
When we returned to the campground, a nice surprise awaited us.  Our neighbors from the Netherlands who were flying home today left us a pile of things they no longer need....water hoses, beer, paper towels, bottled water, charcoal, detergent, and more.  Nice!

DINNER:  Stir-fried rice with leftover turkey, edamame beans, green onions, and eggs.  I even found some sesame seeds, from my cupboard in Rochester.

  1. Karmen this may already be on your itinerary, but I highly recommend a visit to Seward, south of Anchorage. Some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen.
