April 2, 2016. Port Arthur Penal Colony

CAMPGROUND:  White Sands Tourist Park. Top notch!  Nice kitchen, beautiful bathrooms, great wifi.  $18.  5 stars
LOCATION:  80 miles SE of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
WEATHER:  Nice in AM.  Cold, windy and rain in PM.  Highs in 50s

We left the secluded Bruny Island national park campground in search of coffee and breakfast.  We had to drive about 15 miles to a paved road.  We woke sleeping animals and they started jumping in front of our van.  We almost hit a wallaby, then a kangaroo zipped b in front of us.  It takes my breadth away!

We caught the ferry back to mainland Tasmania.

Our van was the first one on the ferry. It always makes me nervous, thinking the van might just slip off into the water.  Approaching the dock....

We had to drive through Hobart on our way to our destination, Port Arthur.  Right as we were getting on a high, long bridge, George notified me that the gas tank was on empty.  He drives me crazy when he does that.  We had passed, and even entered a gas station in Hobart, but he didn't fill up, looking for a better price.  We did make it across the bridge and found a gas station.  Whew!

On our way to Port Arthur, we passed by vineyards and apple orchards, full of apples ready to be picked.  We stopped at this " oyster and wine shed".  It is on a hill overlooking bays on 3 sides.  We watched this Chinese guy eating a dozen oysters.  He was being filmed by about 4 people, with his commentary about the oysters and wine.  Not sure if he is just a tourist or some type of Chinese movie star.  We did see a Rolls Royce in the car park.

On to Port Arthur, home of the most famous Australian prison in the 1800s.  Thousands of male prisoners, British ones who had re-offended here in Australia, were imprisoned here.  It was a huge penal colony.
Our tour included a boat ride where we passed Island of the Dead, where the prisoners were buried, and another Islsnd where boys were imprisoned.  It started to rain, then a rainbow appeared, right over the boys' island.

We found this nice RV park and settled in for the evening.

DINNER:  Leftover rotisserie chicken salad, and potato wedges.  I made chicken broth to use later.
