December 8, 2015. Pacific highway camping

CAMPGROUND:  Rincon Highway.  It is actually 100 RV sites right on highway 1.  Steps from the ocean. No services, just a porta-potti. $28.  4 stars
LOCATION:  7 miles north of Ventura, California.  About 20 miles south of Santa Barbara.  On california's Central Coast.
WEATHER: Beautiful. High about 80

We took our time at Morro Bay since it was so nice.  A couple came over to look at the airstream.  I don't think they were serious buyers, just curious.

Then, we hit the road south.  We passed miles of vegetable fields with migrant workers picking the veg.  We had a short 120-mile drive today.  Our goal was to stay close to northern Los Angeles so that tomorrow we can plow our way through the city, stopping south of LA.

Santa Barbara is famous for its beauty, restaurants, and fantastic resorts where movie stars live.  My guidebook suggested a hole-in-the-wall taco place that people drive hours to eat at. It was one of Julia Child's favorite places when she lived here.  So, we got off the highway to eat there.  Alas, it was closed on Tuesdays.  So, we went with Plan B, a brewpub.

We started searching for a campground south of Santa Barbara.  We got off Highway 101, on to the Pacific Highway, looking for a state park.  Suddenly we started seeing many RVs parked along the highway.

We realized it was actually a bonafide camping area.  We pulled into one of the slots.  It is unbelievable!  We sat and watched the waves crash in front of us.

We walked on the beach, and talked with a surfer who says this area is "heaven".

Then, we watched the dramatic sunset.  We can see the Channel Islands right in front of us.

The sunset just got prettier and prettier....

We took glasses of wine and walked over to another campsite.  They had a bonfire going, next to the rocks.  They live nearby, but like to camp here for the experience.

What a find!

DINNER:  Surprisingly good tuna and pasta dish.  Added capers, sautéed onions, sautéed chopped kale,  and cream cheese for the sauce.
