August 1, 2015. Enjoying Sunset Bay State Park

CAMPGROUND:  Last night at Sunset Bay State Park
LOCATION: SW Oregon on coast, near Coos Bay
WEATHER:  Foggy. Highs in 60s

This campground has a lot to offer, especially for families.  There is an interpretive center next to our campsite where children can go to play games with the ranger, and do nature-related crafts. Everyday there are 1-2 ranger-led talks/hikes.  We have gone on several.  The campground has a few yurt sites.  It would be great for us if some non-camping  friends could join us, staying in one while we stayed in the Airstream.

We got up early this morning and joined a ranger for a tide pool tour.

We were really lucky.  The tides were extremely low due to last night's blue moon.  These only occur once in a blue moon.  (Haha.... About twice a year).  We scrambled upon rocks that normally are under water, even at low tide.  Just 6 hours before, the water had been 11 feet higher.  The ranger showed us sea creatures that we normally wouldn't see.  This is an anemone.

The rocks were slippery with algae so we crawled around like crabs.

After the 2-hour tour, we climbed back up to the road, then back to the Airstream for a Sunday morning Bliody Mary.  What a life!

Then, we went to another part of the park for a tour of the gardens.  See next post...
