August 4, 2015. Intro to Lassen National Park

CAMPGROUND: Lake Manzanita Campground inside Lassen National Park. Nice sites, near lake. No hook-ups. Decent bathrooms. Pay showers near store. 4 stars. $12.00/night with senior pass
LOCATION:  Lassen National Park. Northeastern California.  Nearest town is Mineral, California
WEATHER:  Nice and cool. Highs around 70

We drove about 75 miles east through Lassen National Forest.  It is called a scenic highway, and it really is, a million acres of lush forest.  However, there are huge ugly swaths of barren mountains from recent forest fires.

There are several campgrounds inside the park, but from the guidebook, I thought the Lake Manzanita one would be best for us.  We arrived about noon and found a few sites still available.  We will stay here 4 nights, then go to our house-sit.  Since we are at 5900 feet elevation, it is cool here, unlike the hot valley.

We biked around the campground, then to the park's museum and visitor center.  We watched a movie about the park.  It has 4 active volcanoes in it.  The last eruption was in 1914.  Then we took a 2-mile hike around the lake.  Very beautiful with Mount Lassen as a backdrop.

The campground is pretty full.  We met the couple next to us, and they joined us for drinks around the campfire.  We cooked dinner over the fire, then ate inside as it started to rain.

DINNER:  Leftover wieners with sautéed onions and beans.  Side was corn.
