April 10, 2016. Little Bavaria in Australia

LOCATION:  House-sitting in Adelaide, South Australia
WEATHER:  Fall is in the air!  Highs in 60s

Our neighbor Gwen kindly invited us on an outing today.  First, we went to a fabulous Sunday farmers' market.  We sampled lots of goodies, and bought some delicious sheep's cheese and smoked trout.

Then, up to Windy Point which overlooks the city.  Gwen and George.....

Gwen was a midwife in London, shortly after the time the TV show "Call the Midwife" took place.  She has similar memories of being a district nurse.....visiting her patients at home, pedaling night and day around her district.

Then, we drove through Adelaide Hills.  First it is a suburb-like hilly area, then converts to farms, with sheep, cows and grapes.  We stopped at a tiny winery for tasting.  The wines were super cheap, about     $55 for a case of 12.  The bottles are called "clear skin" as they don't have any labels.  The owner explained that they have a lot of local customers who just want a good, everyday wine.  In order to sell it more cheaply, they save money by not labeling.  Good idea, I think.

On through the country to Hahndorf, a German town.  It was bustling with tourists, taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather and colors. After all, it is the equivalent of October here.

We had a huge German lunch, with different wursts, including the Australian kransky (possum and wallaby).  :-)

And of course, some good German beer.

Once home, George walked over to the neighborhood brewpub.  He said it was hopping with a Sunday afternoon concert.  I played with Mello, our dog.

DINNER:  Fettucine with tuna sauce.  Side salad

We watched David Attenborough's new series on the Great Barrier Reef.  We are anxious to visit it in a few months.  Then, Call the Midwife.  It was particularly interesting, thinking of our neighbor Gwen.
