March 10, 2015. From desert to mountain-top.

CAMPGROUND: Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Woodsy, conveniently close to town. Small sites. Great bathrooms. Electricity and water available, but we have a site without ...to save money.  $22./night. 4 stars
LOCATION:  Idyllwild, California, about 50 miles west of Palm Springs
WEATHER:  90s in desert; 60s on the mountain-top

We lounged around the hotel in Palm Springs.  It seems decadent compared to the sparse desert campgrounds where we have been recently.  This is the view from our hotel room..

Water makes such a difference in the landscape.  Here is what it looks like without water..

Add water, and it looks like this across the street...
We sat around the pool, enjoying the luxury...

Someone we were talking with recommended that we visit Idyllwild, so we decided to head there.  It is a village at the top of a mountain.  We left Palm Springs, about 95 degrees at about 2000 feet in altitude.  We climbed the mountain to about 7000 feet with 60 degree temps.  The road was scary with hairpin turns and few guardrails.  I closed my eyes most of the way.  We passed through patches of snow. The vegetation changed from cactus and palm trees to mountain laurel and pine trees.

The state park is very close to the village.  We are the only campers here. We set up the camper and walked to town.  It is really cute. We had a late lunch and visited some of the shops.  I hadn't seen a grocery store in Palm Springs, so was hoping to shop here.  Unfortunately, the town market just had a few essentials, so we will eat dinners out.

Back at the campground, George fixed some of the damage caused by our tire blowout.

We walked back to town for dinner.  We sat at the bar and talked with some locals.  It was $1 Taco Tuesday, so we had those, and enjoyed the conversation.

I really like this area.....cool, cute village, great restaurants, hiking trails, funky shops.  We will stay here 2 nights.
