LOCATION: Outside Lake Charles, Louisuana
WEATHER: Rain on-and-off. Highs around 50
We drove southwest through flooded fields. The farmers cultivate crawfish in the fields, and then plant rice in them. We saw lots of crawfish nets. We drove past a town claiming to be "Cajun music capital of the world". We want to return some time when the weather is better.
Since it is New Year's Day, several campers were watching football games on big-screen TVs mounted on the outside of their big-rig campers.
They also were cooking up something in their deep-fat fryers.
We hiked in the swamp. There are signs warning about alligators, but they are hibernating this time of year.
We don't have any specific plans for 2015. The general plan is to be in Texas, Arizona and perhaps Baja in the cold months. .Then head to Utah, Nevada, and California in the spring, then Oregon and Washington in the summer. Vague plans to leave our camper with a friend in Oregon, then take train across Canada to see some friends in Nova Scotia in late summer. Then, fly to Europe from east coast to join Meredith and husband for a belated honeymoon in Sept-Oct, tacking on some other European travel while we are there. All very tentative. Maybe a trip to Rochester on the way back, to see folks and to do medical/dental appointments.
DINNER: Hoppin' John, a southern tradition that is supposed to bring good luck for the upcoming year. It is black-eyed peas with rice. I jazzed it up with onions, garlic, and the smoked sausage we had bought in the Cajun meat market. Very tasty!
