CAMPGROUND: 6th night at Goose Island State Park
WEATHER: In a word.....awful. Cold, rain, winds. Highs around 40
The predicted cold front arrived. We had saved up indoor activities for this event. We drove about 35 miles south to Corpus Christi, in search of a brewpub or two. We found the Railroad Station Seafood and Brewery. I had a good black IPA; George had a double IPA from a guest brewery in Houston. We split a blackened filet of drum fish, a popular species caught in the Gulf shores.
There is one other brewery in town, but they don't have a tap room. With nothing better to do, we took the ferry across the bay to Port Aransas. The visibility was pretty poor...everything shades of grey,.
We stopped at a brewpub there. They didn't have an IPA. George had a pretty good stout. Back on the ferry to the mainland, porpoises were chasing fish in front of us.
This is an efficient (and free) ferry service.
Someone had told us about a great seafood market on the way back to the campground, so we stopped to check it out. Indeed, the selection was great.
We bought a filet of Amber jack.....the huge one in the middle of the picture above. $6.00.
Then, we went to a seafood shack near the campground, where we had heard that they serve oysters on the half shell for $4.50/dozen during happy hour. They were delicious!
DINNER: Cooking outside was out of the question in the rain and cold. I dusted the filets in a flour/spice mix and grilled them in a saucepan indoors. With the extra flour mix, I made a roux with some beer (out of wine). I thinned down the sauce and drizzled it over the fish, rice, and some canned vegetables. Very tasty!
We stayed cozy and warm inside while the wind howled and the rain beat down on the camper.
I am SHOCKED that you of all people would run out of wine! How is that possible?
