January 10, 2015. Searching for sun on South Padre Island

CAMPGROUND:  Isla  Blanca  County Park. Facilities so-so, but super location.  Electricity, water, sewer. Like a commercial RV park. Bathrooms not great. 3 stars. $160/week.
LOCATION:  South Padre Island in far southwest Texas, near Brownsville.  Not far from Mexico.
WEATHER:  Another nasty day.  Cold, rain, wind. High around 40.

We awoke to another dreary day.  I've been wearing 4 layers of clothes for the last few days.  George hooked up in the cold, pouring rain.  We headed south, about 200 miles.  Our destination was South Padre Island, where we enjoyed 10 days last winter.  Today, we were 5 miles from Port Isabel, the bridge to the island, where we encountered a roadblock. Lightening had hit an electricity box and they closed the road to fix it.  We had to take a 1-hour detour to the island.  We finally arrived about 5:00.

It has been raining here, and our site is a gigantic mud puddle.  We are near the bay, right next to a seafood restaurant.

We retuned to South Padre Island as it is a lot of fun.  Last year, we got to know our neighbors, and had evening get-togethers.  There is a free shuttle on the island with a stop at the campground, that will take you anywhere on the island, or to the mainland.  There are good restaurants and really friendly people.  We recognize one of the campers from last year.

As soon as we got unhooked, we made a beeline to Padre Island Brewery, which George loved lays year. Happy hour was inexpensive beer and oysters on the half shell. I had a pale ale, and George had their Speckled Trout Stout.

DINNER:  I followed a recipe that is a combination of gumbo and jambalaya.  I made it with Cajun Louisiana sausage, chicken, celery, green onions, okra, garlic, chicken broth, and lots of spices.  Great on a cool night, listening to Prairie Home Companion.  Garrison talked about the frigid weather that Minnesota is experiencing.
