July 16, 2016. Historic pubs of Oxford

LOCATION:  House-sitting in Oxford
WEATHER:  Sunny and warm. Highs mid-70s

Our other cat is quite shy, but finally came out to play this morning.

We walked to the center of Oxford, to the historic area with lots of colleges and churches.  The city was teeming with tourists.

First up was a stop at The Eagle & Child pub.  Tolkien wrote The Hobbit while living in Oxford.  He and CS Lewis (of Chronicles of Narnia fame) met weekly at this pub.

As we crossed the street, we passed this don.

A cup of soup and a beer at The Lamb and Flag pub was next.  The students at nearby  St. John's College opened this tavern in the 1600s and proceeds still help fund the college.  We learned that Thomas Hardy wrote large parts of a novel in this pub.

Very cozy inside!

Traffic in Oxford is bad.  Lots of tourist buses and general traffic.  So, locals mostly walk and bike.  The train station has a full parking lot!

We stopped at a festival in a downtown square with dancing and food stalls.  We shared an Indian wrap.

We escaped back home to the quiet.

DINNER:  Chicken vegetable soup.
